ES File Explorer is not on Google Play anymore, so there is no clean one click ES File Explorer for PC download. On Windows, the built in File Explorer already covers most of what it did. If you genuinely need the Android app, the only official source is the developer’s own site, estrongs.com, sideloaded into an emulator.

Why ES File Explorer is not on the Play Store

Two separate events took the app out of normal circulation. In April 2019, Google removed apps from developer DO Global, including ES File Explorer, after investigations into ad fraud and click fraud practices. Then in June 2020, the Indian government banned ES File Explorer as part of its block on 59 Chinese linked apps.

The result today: any “ES File Explorer” you find on Google Play is a lookalike clone by a different developer, not the original app. An earlier version of this article pointed to one of those listings, and we have removed it. The genuine app is distributed only through the developer’s own website, and it still receives updates there as of 2026.

What Windows users should actually do

If you searched for ES File Explorer for Windows, the honest answer is that you probably do not need it. Windows already ships with File Explorer, which handles the everyday jobs ES was famous for on Android: browsing folders, moving and renaming files, extracting ZIP archives and reaching network shares. On Windows 11 it even has tabs.

Do not download it from APK mirror sites: repackaged copies of delisted apps are a classic malware channel, and this app is a prime target because so many people search for it. If the official site will not load from your network or region, treat that as your answer and use an alternative instead.

Install ES File Explorer on Windows with an emulator

Because the app is not on Google Play, the usual emulator flow changes slightly: you sideload the APK instead of installing from the store. This works the same on Windows 11 and Windows 10:

1. Install BlueStacks from the official bluestacks.com site and open it.
2. In your Windows browser, download the ES File Explorer APK from estrongs.com.
3. Drag the downloaded APK file onto the BlueStacks window. BlueStacks installs sideloaded APKs automatically, no Play Store needed.
4. Open the app. Skip the bundled extras it offers, like the cleaner and booster screens, and deny any permission it does not need for plain file browsing.

Is ES File Explorer safe to use in 2026?

Use it with your eyes open. Beyond the 2019 ad fraud removal, researchers showed in January 2019 that the app left an open local port that let anyone on the same network pull files from the device, a hole that was later patched. None of that means the current build is malicious, but the track record is why we suggest the built in Windows tools first and this app only when you specifically miss one of its features, such as its LAN and FTP browsing inside an Android environment.

The official way to use Notability on a Windows PC

Ginger Labs launched Notability Web specifically so that people on Windows, Linux, and Android could finally reach their notes without an Apple device. It runs in a normal browser tab, no download required. Sign in with the same Notability account you use on your iPad and your synced notes are there.

What you can actually do in the browser version: create and organize typed notes, import files such as PDFs, DOCs, and PPTs, record audio with live transcripts, and use the AI study tools that turn notes or YouTube links into summaries, quizzes, and flashcards. Ginger Labs has said live collaboration is on the roadmap. Creating an account is free, and the heavier AI features are tied to Notability’s paid plans, so check the current plan page before assuming a feature is included.

The main limitation to know up front: Notability Web is built around typed notes and imported documents. The full handwriting experience that made Notability famous still lives on the iPad app with an Apple Pencil. Why the emulator route does not exist for Notability

Plenty of guides tell you to install Notability on Windows through an Android emulator. That advice is wrong at the first step: Notability has never had an Android version, so there is nothing for BlueStacks or any other Android emulator to install. Emulators only work for apps that exist on Android, the way they do for most productivity apps for PC.

Be equally suspicious of any site offering a “Notability for Windows” .exe download. Ginger Labs does not publish one, so whatever that installer contains, it is not Notability. The only official ways in are the Apple App Store, the Mac App Store, and notability.com.

Honest Windows alternatives for handwritten notes

If you want a native app on your Windows laptop or Surface, these are the realistic options:

• OneNote (free): Microsoft’s note app is the closest free equivalent. It handles ink with a stylus, audio recording, PDF printouts you can write over, and syncs through OneDrive. On a Surface with a pen it covers most of what people use Notability for, at no cost.
• Goodnotes for Windows: Notability’s biggest rival ships an actual Windows app in the Microsoft Store. If you specifically want the paper-notebook feel with folders and handwritten PDFs on Windows, this is the closest match to the iPad experience.
• Notability Web plus an iPad: if you already own an iPad, the practical setup is handwriting on the iPad and reviewing, organizing, and studying from Notability Web on your PC. That combination works today and needs no workarounds.

Moving to Windows? Get your notes out first

If you are leaving the Apple ecosystem rather than adding a PC beside it, export your notes before you lose easy access to an iPad or Mac. In the Notability app, notes and whole subjects can be exported as PDF, which every Windows app can open, or as RTF for typed content you want to keep editing. Send the exports to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox and they are waiting for you on the PC. PDF exports keep your handwriting exactly as written, but the ink becomes a flat image, so do this while you can still tidy up pages on the iPad. Notability’s own .note format is useless outside Notability, so never rely on it as an archive format.

One more practical tip: audio recordings attached to notes do not travel inside a PDF export. If a recording matters, export the audio separately from the note’s share options, or keep your Notability subscription active so the recordings stay reachable through Notability Web.
