What happened to UC Browser Turbo

UC Turbo launched in 2019 as a lighter, cleaner spin-off of UC Browser: fast downloads, ad blocking, less clutter. It picked up over 50 million installs quickly, which is why so many people still search for a PC version of it today.

Then two things happened. In June 2020, India banned UC Browser and other UCWeb apps on data and privacy grounds, cutting the app off from its biggest market. And after October 27, 2021, UCWeb simply stopped updating UC Turbo. The Google Play listing is still live in most regions, but it has now gone almost five years without a single patch. UC Turbo or UC Browser: which one do you actually mean?

A lot of searches mix the two apps up, so it is worth separating them. UC Browser is the main product: the full-featured mobile browser with the download manager and the huge install base, and the one that historically also had a Windows desktop build. UC Turbo was the 2019 spin-off: smaller, faster, ad blocking on by default, aimed at people who found the main app bloated. Why a browser with no updates is a real problem

For most app categories, an old but working app is a minor annoyance. For a web browser it is a genuine security risk. Browsers are the single most attacked type of software you run: they execute code from every site you visit, and browser engines get critical security fixes monthly for a reason. A browser frozen in 2021 is missing years of those fixes. Whatever speed or data savings UC Turbo once offered, that trade is no longer worth it in 2026.

Can you still run UC Turbo on a PC?

Technically, yes. Because the Play listing is still live, an Android emulator such as BlueStacks can install it: set up BlueStacks on Windows 10 or 11, sign in with a Google account, search Play for UC Turbo, and install. It will open and browse.

We are describing that for completeness, not recommending it. You would be running an unpatched 2021 browser inside an extra software layer, on the open web. There is also no UC Turbo APK we will link to: the app was free on Play, so anything an APK mirror adds is risk, not value. What to use instead on Windows

UC Turbo’s pitch was fast browsing with ads blocked and data saved. On a Windows PC, three current browsers cover that pitch properly:

• Brave is the closest match in spirit: ad and tracker blocking on by default, noticeably fast on modest hardware, Chromium-based so every site works.
• Opera ships a built-in ad blocker and a free built-in VPN, and its interface will feel familiar to former UC users.
• Microsoft Edge is already on your Windows 10 or 11 machine, gets patched constantly, and its efficiency mode is kind to older laptops.

What happened to CM Browser

CM Browser was Cheetah Mobile’s lightweight Android browser, popular in the mid-2010s for its small size, ad blocking and download speed. It did not fade away quietly; it was removed.

In February 2020, Google pulled Cheetah Mobile’s apps from the Play Store during its crackdown on disruptive ad behavior. Around the same time, a security researcher found that CM Browser was sending users’ visited URLs to remote servers, a finding reported by Forbes. In June 2020, the Government of India banned CM Browser along with 58 other apps over data and privacy concerns. The Android app itself had already stopped receiving updates in June 2019. Put together: no store listing, no updates, no trust. The browser is dead in every way that matters.

What CM Browser offered, and what to look for in a replacement

It is easy to forget why the app was popular. CM Browser, sometimes searched as the Cheetah browser for Windows, was tiny by the standards of its day, blocked ads without extensions, warned about malicious pages, and had a fast built-in download manager. There was even a CM Browser build for Windows desktops distributed through Cheetah Mobile’s own site; that build received its last known update in 2021 and the download page no longer resolves, so the Windows version is as gone as the Android one.

Those four features are also your shopping list for a replacement: small footprint, built-in ad blocking, malicious-site protection, and a decent download manager. Every browser we recommend below checks all four boxes without needing a single extension.

Warning: the CM Browser on Google Play today is not the original

If you search Google Play for CM Browser in 2026, you will find a listing with that exact name. It is not Cheetah Mobile’s browser. The current listing is from an unrelated developer, has about a thousand installs, and simply reuses a recognizable name. This is a common pattern with discontinued apps: a well-known name gets recycled to catch leftover searches. Treat any modern CM Browser listing, APK or exe with suspicion, because the company that built the real one no longer distributes it.

Why we will not link a CM Browser APK or old version

Plenty of sites still offer a CM Browser free download, usually version 5.x APKs from 2019. We will not, for three reasons. First, a browser without security patches since 2019 is unsafe on the modern web, full stop. Second, the app’s documented history of shipping browsing data to remote servers is exactly the behavior you cannot audit in a random APK. Third, APK mirrors themselves add tampering risk. People installed CM Browser for three things: speed on modest hardware, built-in ad blocking, and a sense of security. Current browsers do all three better on Windows 10 and 11:

• Microsoft Edge comes with Windows, gets monthly security patches, and its SmartScreen filter provides the malicious-site protection CM Browser advertised.

The official way to get Puffin on PC

The current official Puffin desktop product is Puffin Secure Browser, and it is the one CloudMosa actively supports on Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS. It works differently from Chrome or Edge: every page is rendered on CloudMosa’s cloud servers and streamed to your screen, so risky scripts and downloads execute in the cloud instead of on your computer. That remote rendering trick is the same reason Puffin always felt quick on weak hardware.

One thing to know before you click download: Puffin Secure Browser is a paid subscription and there is no free desktop plan. CloudMosa lists current plans on puffin.com, and independent 2026 reviews put the price at roughly one to two dollars a month, so it is cheap, just not free. The installer comes straight from the official site, which is the only place you should get it.

What happened to the free Puffin for Windows

If you remember downloading a free Puffin desktop browser a few years ago, you are not imagining it. CloudMosa shipped a regular Puffin for Windows, then announced in December 2023 that it was discontinued and pointed desktop users to Puffin Secure Browser instead. The old installer is no longer maintained or distributed by CloudMosa.

That matters for one practical reason: any third-party site still offering a free “Puffin browser download for PC” today is handing you either an abandoned build or a repackaged installer with extras you do not want. Skip those and stick to puffin.com or the Play Store route below.

Install Puffin on Windows with an emulator

The mobile Puffin Cloud Browser is still free on Android, so the no-cost way to run Puffin on a Windows laptop or desktop is an Android emulator:

1. Install BlueStacks from the official bluestacks.com site. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are both supported.
2. Open BlueStacks and sign in with your Google account when prompted.
3. Open the Play Store inside BlueStacks and search for Puffin Cloud Browser, or use the official listing by CloudMosa on Google Play.
