What Andy was
Andy launched in 2012 as a full Android emulator for Windows and Mac, built on VirtualBox. For a few years it was a legitimate rival to early BlueStacks: it ran a complete Android environment, synced apps between your phone and desktop, and let you use the phone as a controller. Plenty of people ran WhatsApp and mid-2010s Android games on it, which is why the name still shows up in emulator searches today.
The cryptominer scandal that killed it
In June 2018 a Reddit user noticed his GPU was under load whenever his PC was idle after installing Andy. He traced it to a process called updater.exe living in C:\Program Files (x86)\Updater, installed silently alongside the emulator and mining cryptocurrency on the machine’s graphics card. At the time, most antivirus products did not flag it. What turned an incident into a scandal was the response: instead of explaining, the developers deleted complaint threads and banned the users who reported it from their support channels. Follow-up investigation threads confirmed the behavior, coverage spread across the Android press, and trust in the project collapsed. The last official release remains the April 2018 build, and there has been no credible development since.
Why there is no safe Andy download
The official distribution channels are gone, so every Andy download you can find today is a third-party mirror repacking installers from the 2018 era, which is exactly the era of the bundled miner.
